Behaviors Don’t stand in an aggressive manner, like with hands on hips or pointing directly at someone with your index finger)
Don’t embarrass people, particularly in front of their subordinates, even in jest. Indonesians are not used to such behaviour and have great difficulty in accepting the loss of face it is considered to cause.
Be careful with your ironic humour. This will go down like a lead balloon with Indonesian locals who are likely to take any joking comment literally and possibly be quite upset.
Don’t try to force a decision or a direct answer as this can be quite uncomfortable for the person you are dealing with, even Indonesian partners. Ask some general or hypothetical questions and listen to the feedback for an indication of true wishes.
Be careful with “Up to you” response. Sometimes, it is more likely to mean disagreement and that the person is “shy” or unwilling to express a contrary opinion for fear of upsetting you, particularly if your view seems to be strongly held.
Please note that in some Indonesian cultures the left hand is generally considered to be unclean. You should avoid passing food or other items, including money, with the left hand.
Don’t eat or drink until the host has invited you to eat or drink.
Don’t offer pork or any other derivatives of pigs to Muslims.
Please be respect to the older people.
