Indonesia : North Sulawesi : Language

Language

Over the centuries four ethnic groups have coalesced out of the dozens of interrelated peoples that formerly inhabited North Sulawesi. The Name of the four ethnic groups parallel the names of the provines's districts, i.e.:Bolaang Mongondow, Gorontalo, Sangihe Talaud and Minahasa. Eventhough "Bahasa Indonesia" is spoken as National Language, in practice people of the four tribes inhabited this region still recognize and identity local groups and sub groups, distinguished mainly by language or dialect according to their backgrounds. Bolaang Mongondow Language Group are Mongondow, Lolak, Bintauna, Boroko/Bolangitang, Bolango and Bantik Mongondow. Gorontalo Language Group are Gorontalo, Suwawa (Bone) and Atinggola. Sangihe Talaud Languange Group are Talaud (Talaur), Sanger Besar and Siau. Meanwhile, Minahasa Language Group areTombulu, Tonsea, Toulour, Tountemboan, Tounsawang, Pasan Ratahan, Ponosakan Belang, Bantik Minahasa
