Geography The island of Kalimantan that used to be known as Borneo is divided into four provinces. One of the provinces is East Kalimantan, and it is about 211,440 hectares wide, located on 113°,44”-119°,00” West Longitude and 4°, 25’ North latitude. East kalimantan is bordered by East Malaysia to the north, Makasar Strait to the east, South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan to the south, and West Kalimantan to the west.
East Kalimantan consists of 4 regencies (Kutai, Bulungan, Berau and Pasir), 2 municipalities (Samarinda and Balikpapan) and 2 Administrative Town (Bontang and Tarakan).
East Kalimantan has lowlands, hills and highlands. Spread out to the west is Iban Mountain Range and Muller Range, which serve as the border to Serawak (East Malaysia). Stretched out to the south is Meratus Mountain Range, which serves as the border to South Kalimantan. |
