Economy Indonesia's richest oil fields are to be found in Riau, as well as huge deposits of tin and bauxite.
Forestry provides an important contribution to the economy in terms of the stabilization of the land structure and content. Riau is covered by 9,46 million hectares of forest, of this 0,40 million hectares is protected forest. Forest products are rattan, resin, gum and forest fruits used for oils (oil of suntai, and seminai fruit). Other produce includes kelapa sawit (oil palm), kelapa hibrida (hybrid coconut) , kelapa biasa (plain coconut), rumbia (sago), jackfruit, durian, rambutan, rose apples, and grains. Some of the plant produce is processed using modern technology, such as kelapa sawit for palm oil, copra for coconut oil, cassave for tapioca flour, and various fruits for syrups or canned fruits. Cloves are the main source of income for the local people.
The Government's development program of animal husbandry is aimed at increasing the population and production of cattle to cover the nutritional needs of the people and increase the cattle breeders' income.
The fishery industry is mainly sourced from the sea with approximately 7.2% coming from fishponds and rivers. |
