West Sumatera West Sumatra Province covers 42,229 square kilometer area with Padang as its capital. It is also the home of Minangkabau people. Approximately 4.5 million people inhabit the province.
West Sumatra is an extremely mountainous region, which includes jungle-covered volcanoes, nature reserve, beautiful rice-field, huge pristine lakes, beautiful seas and beaches and small village communities.
The Minangkabau has matriarchal system of culture. In the past day, families lived in a huge rumah gadang or big house that are common to the heritage of Indonesia Archipelago. Rumah gadang are abundant in every village.
The West Sumatra’s language is Minang and each district or Nagari has its own dialect. But people in rural and urban areas can speak Bahasa Indonesia well. |
