Indonesia : Jambi

Jambi

Covering an area of 53,435 square kilometers, of which 60% is forest, the province of Jambi offers a fascinating glimpse of pristine nature and ancient culture to adventurous visitors. The tallest mountain peak in Sumatra, the 3,805 meter high, Mt. Kerinci, is located on the border between Jambi and West Sumatra, and the area surrounding the mountain has been set aside as a national park, Kerinci Sablat. The reserve is still inhabited by rare species of wildlife, including rhinos and the Sumatran tiger, the province’s official “mascot.” Jambi is one of the most thinly populated areas of Sumatra, with only about two million people spread out over its wide area. The original inhabitants of Jambi, the Kubu ethnic group, are an indigenous tribe of nomadic hunter-gatherers, many of whom still practice their ancient ways. Travelers to Jambi can expect basic facilities, but for those willing to leave the beaten path, an unforgettable experience is assured.
