East Java  The East Java province is a land of sharp and spectacular contrasts. Surabaya, the province’s capital, is second only to Jakarta in terms of size and economic importance. But few hours drive to the south, on the rugged coast of the Indian Ocean, there is Alas Purwo National Park, a stunning stretch of wild forest, home to a fascinating range of rare wildlife.
The city Malang, nestled in the cool hills of the interior, is one of the most pleasant cities in Indonesia, with its fresh clean air and array of interesting attractions. In the center of the province lies Mount Semeru, Java’s largest volcanic peak, which is believed by Indonesia’s Hindus to be the most sacred mountain in the country. The rugged and beautiful terrain surrounding it and nearby Mount Bromo are home to the Tengger people, an ethnic group that still hold fast to their traditions amid the changes of century. Scattered throughout the province are vast numbers of interesting sights, including ancient Buddhist and Hindu temples and such natural wonders as hot springs, volcanic lakes and waterfalls. |
