Cambodia Destination Guides > Country Overview

Cambodia is a country that, until recently, has been untouched by tourism due to war, the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge, poverty and political instability. Between 1975 and 1979 nearly 25% of the population perished under the Khmer Rouge's horrific and genocidal reign. Today Cambodia offers travelers the contrast between one of mankind's most supreme accomplishments at Angkor Wat, and one of its most heinous crimes - the mass slaughter of over 2 million people. As many as perhaps one in every 100 Cambodians have lost limbs after falling victim to the land mines that still lie buried in the countryside.

However, Cambodia it is now experiencing its first period of relative peace for many years. Although still considered by some to be a bit of a tourist backwater, Cambodia is now on the South-East Asian travel map, and for the adventurous visitor, the country offers ancient temples, pristine beaches, thundering rivers, remote forests and a range of unique attractions illustrating its rich cultural past. The ruins of the ancient Khmer civilization at Angkor Wat near Siem Reap rank among the wonders of the world; the beautiful capital city, Phnom Penh, offers colonial French architecture, museums and temples, and a visit to the small villages in Cambodia’s countryside can lead to wonderful experiences. Despite their turbulent history, the Cambodian people are cheerful and friendly, and foreigners are made to feel most welcome.
